Choosing Child Care

Social Emotional Learning

To ensure your child care supports your child, your family, and your ability to get to work, it’s important to choose a high-quality child care program.

High-quality care between birth and age 5 can help make sure that your child is ready to start school. In these early years, children learn and develop the skills and attitudes they will need to succeed in school.

Quality Preschool Social and Emotional

Choosing quality child care can be complicated. Fortunately, there are tools to help you select the right program. From licensing and inspection report websites to The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) that sets national standards for child care, which serve as the foundation for its accreditation program.

Understanding the standards can help families learn what high-quality means, and what to look for in care program.

Developmental Screening

When you’re choosing a child care provider, it is important to look for evidence that your child’s health and safety will be a priority. Looking for a licensed program is one step you can take to help choose a safe place for your child.

What rules and regulations do child care providers in your state follow to protect your child’s health and safety? Are child care providers screened for past criminal activity? What training should child care providers have before they begin caring for your child?

Scientific Principles

Vroom tools and resources are designed to promote three key scientific principles:

  1. Positive connections with caring adults help a child’s brain grow strong and flexible.

  2. Back-and-forth interactions, or conversations, build a child’s brain in ways that help their learning, health, and behavior both now and in the future.

  3. Building life skills like early literacy, focus, self-control, problem-solving, and taking on challenges in their early years helps a child today and later in life.
